Java Pepper Steak


  • 1½ lbs (750g) 4 Traditional Steaks (Rib Eye, Strip Loin or Tenderloin)
  • 4 tsp (20ml) finely ground coffee (optional)
  • 4 tsp (20ml) freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp (10ml) ground cumin
  • Salt to taste

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 10-12 minutes


Preheat barbecue or broiler. Meanwhile, combine coffee, pepper, cumin and salt in large resealable freezer bag. Shake each steak separately in bag until evenly coated. Grill, broil or pan-fry steaks for 5-6 minutes per side or until cooked to desired doneness.


The coffee in this recipe beautifully balances out the other flavours; however, if you think it’s too unusual, it can be omitted.
